The sensor operates on the optical principle of nephelometry. It uses an infrared light source (emitter) and a photodetector set at a 90-degree angle. When placed in a liquid, the sensor emits a beam of light. If the water is clear, very little light reaches the detector. If the water contains suspended particles, they scatter the light, and the amount of scattered light captured by the detector is proportional to the turbidity of the liquid.

This module provides both an analog and a digital output. The analog output gives a variable voltage that you can use to determine the exact level of turbidity (measured in NTU, Nephelometric Turbidity Units). The digital output provides a simple HIGH or LOW signal when the turbidity crosses a threshold, which can be set using the onboard potentiometer. This makes it easy to integrate with microcontrollers like Arduino or ESP32.
